Name: Johanna Mason
Canon: The Hunger Games
Original or Alternate Universe: Original Universe
Canon Point: In Mockingjay, after she arrives in District 13 for the first time.
Number: 070. It looked like that was available but let me know if I'm wrong.
Setting: [ Panem | District 7 ]
History:
Little is known about Johanna's early life, except that she most likely learned to wield an axe since she was little due to the fact that she lives in District 7, which specializes in lumber. It is known that she at one time had loved ones. Some time between the ages of thirteen and eighteen (though I headcanon that she was reaped when she was 17), she was reaped for the Hunger Games. She won her Games by 'pretending she was a weakling.' Not much is said beyond that about her Games. Some time after that, Snow had all her loved ones killed. It is unknown whether Snow did this to intimidate her, or if he was trying to pressure her into prostitution like Finnick.
She lived in relatively good health until the Quarter Quell, the 75th annual Hunger Games. The Quarter Quell tributes were reaped from the existing pool of victors. Johanna was the only living female District 7 victor, so she was reaped. Blight was the male tribute for District 7. These Games were different for Johanna. She couldn't pretend to be weak anymore. Her tactics seemed to be intimidation, though her main goals were to 1) help the rebellion, and 2) keep the mockingjay (Katniss) and any of her allies (Peeta, Beetee, Wiress, etc) alive. She and a lot of the other victors were in on the plan to bust them out of the arena.
Johanna decided to strip in front of Katniss and keep talking to Peeta for probably the same reason Chaff kissed Katniss. She's easy to rile up and they wanted to see what would happen or to intimidate. She complained about her designer. In the interviews, Johanna puts on an act, saying that there's such love between the Capitol and the victors, and 'no one could be so cruel as to sever that bond.' When she's sees Katniss in her wedding gown and hears that Snow made her wear it, she tells Katniss 'Make him pay for it, okay?'. She joins hands in the chaos at the end of the interviews.
Presumably, in the arena, she collected Wiress and Beetee and Blight and headed for cover from the careers on the first day. Eventually, Blight runs into the forcefield surrounding the arena and dies. Johanna, Wiress, and Beetee are in the blood rain wedge of the clock-shaped arena and experience the horror of blood rain. They escape and meet up with Katniss and her crew. When a confused and traumatized Wiress runs into Johanna, she pushes her down. When Katniss snaps to lay off her, Johanna slaps Katniss hard and reveals that she got them for her. Finnick dunks Johanna in the water until she calms down.
She and Katniss continue to have a rough relationship. Beetee asks for his wire and Johanna doesn't know what he would do with it, which rings as suspicious to Katniss since she nicknamed him Volts. They have a confrontation, and Katniss believes one of them will try to kill the other eventually. They figure out the arena is a clock and go to the cornucopia island for supplies. They're spun around, and they lose Wiress. She yells to the cameras about how they wouldn't want the whole country in rebellion, showing how gutsy she is. When she's headed to the part of the jungle with jabberjays, Katniss stops her, concerned that they'll torment Johanna, but Johanna replies that 'They can’t hurt me. I’m not like the rest of you. There’s no one left I love.'
Beetee has a plan to use the lightning wedge and the water to electrocute the other tributes. They all agree to this plan. Katniss and Johanna are to run the coil down through the jungle, along the beach, and into the water. Peeta and Finnick are to guard Beetee. The coil is severed, and Johanna hits Katniss, then takes out her tracker. Katniss goes to the tree and shoots the arrow with the coil around it into the arena, destroying it. The rebellion's hover craft saves Finnick and Katniss. They leave the others.
Johanna is caught by the Capitol and tortured for rebellion secrets. It is unknown exactly what methods were used with the exception of water torture. They 'soaked her and then used electric shocks.' When we next see Johanna, she was rescued by the rebels and is being rushed into the hospital in District 13. She's unconscious and emaciated, and she has bruises and oozing scabs.
This is the point in which she would come in Ataraxion.
Personality:
The most obvious part of Johanna's personality is her abrasiveness. Katniss mentions how Johanna's ferocity is in her abrasive attitude. When Johanna shoves Wiress and Katniss tells Johanna to lay off her, Johanna slaps Katniss so hard that she sees stars. Johanna will use physical force to make her point. She was irritated that Katniss was on Wiress' side when Johanna went to all that trouble, got them out of the blood rain and the jungle, and lost her fellow district tribute. To Johanna, Katniss is ungrateful and grating. When a comment she makes implies Katniss let Mags die and Katniss puts her hand on her knife, Johanna says, “Go ahead. Try it. I don’t care if you are knocked up, I’ll rip your throat out.” She really won't kill Katniss because she's the face of the rebellion, but honestly, she was pissed off, and Johanna doesn't have great control over her mouth. The abrasive attitude tends to push people away, which is no doubt exactly how Johanna wants it. The Capitol killed everyone she loves, so getting close to someone is putting them in danger. Johanna most likely has used this abrasiveness to push people away, to keep them from getting hurt and to keep herself from getting hurt.
Johanna's a lot of bravado. She's bold in how she acts and ferocious to intimidate people. She strips down in the elevator and chats with people, knowing Katniss is 'innocent' as Peeta puts it. She intended to intimidate Katniss with this, maybe even just mess with her for fun. She yells out during the Games, “Whole country in rebellion? Wouldn’t want anything like that!” A bold act that she does to spite the Capitol. She has no one left she loves, so it doesn't matter what she says. They can't hurt her anymore. Her deadly skills and manner intimidate and frighten others, such as Gale, though he might have been joking.
Johanna's main motivation is to take down the Capitol. The Capitol forced her to fight to the death twice and murdered everyone she loves. Her hate for President Snow knows no bounds, as shown when Katniss visits her in the hospital in Mockingjay and Johanna makes Katniss promise to kill President Snow. Her smaller motivations are to keep Katniss alive and to keep her allies alive, since she is such a big part of the rebellion. She dislikes Katniss a lot at her canon point, but she knows they need her for the rebellion. Johanna's outlook on life is grim, to say the least. Every day is a struggle, her loved ones are dead and gone, and her bloodthirsty goal of seeing President Snow dead is basically what motivates her.
Underneath all this, Johanna is capable of positive emotions. She befriends Finnick when they were mentors, and she also gradually befriends Katniss in Mockingjay. They help each other train and even share a room. She can form bonds with people that are positive and good. Johanna is also loyal to the people she befriends. She teams up with Finnick in the Quarter Quell and trusts him. This shows that she can not only befriend people, but that she can learn to trust people, too. She also learns to lean on Katniss in Mockingjay. It may not be at her canon point, but it shows that she does have the capability to befriend people and trust them enough to help her.
Johanna has a number of weaknesses that are listed below, but will be examined in depth in this paragraph. As discussed earlier, a lot of her ferocity comes from intimidation. It can be difficult for Johanna to get close to people with her attitude and with the fact that everyone around her gets killed. There's also her mental health. She most likely has PTSD from her times in the Games, from the horrors of killing a person to choking on blood rain to every other horror that the Gamemakers construct in the Games. She also has hydrophobia or aquaphobia, fear of water, from being tortured by soaking her and then shocking her. This really bothers her, to the point she won't shower, is afraid of the rain, and basically has a mental breakdown when water comes rushing toward her in a test. She had a flashback, panicked, and didn't know where she was. Then there's her mouth. Johanna says a lot of things that people don't like, including ripping out Katniss' throat even if she's pregnant, implying that Katniss caused Mags' death, and shouting about the whole country in rebellion.
Abilities, Weaknesses and Power Limitations:
ABILITIES
Acting: She was able to convince everyone that she was weakling. She is easily able to manipulate people to get what she wants.
Survival skills: She must have had the skills necessary to survive an arena because she did, including, but not limited to swimming, plant knowledge, hunting, fighting, and endurance.
Axe wielding: Johanna's main weapon is an axe, which she has probably been practicing with since she was old enough to hold it.
Fear: She is also able to get her way through making people afraid of her with her abrasive attitude and deadly skills. Gale says he's 'terrified' of her.
WEAKNESSES
Fear: While this can be a strength, it is also a weakness. It's hard for Johanna to get close to anyone with her attitude and history.
Mental Health: She probably has PTSD from her times in the Games, but what's more noticeable is her hydrophobia/aquaphobia from being tortured. She can combat it, as shown by her going out in the rain, but it tends to stop her from doing things, like showering.
Her big mouth: Johanna tends to say whatever she's thinking. This doesn't always go over well with people
HUMAN
Johanna is a normal human with no powers.
Inventory:
- (1) hospital gown
- (2) Capitol-made axes
Appearance: In the books, she is described as having wide-set brown eyes and spiky hair. Later, in Mockingjay, she's described as having a shaved head. As that is the canon point I am taking her from, and Jena Malone plays her in the movies, I am using Jena Malone as her pb and using icons when her head was mostly shaved.
Age: There is no canon age for Johanna, but I'm going with 21.
AU Clarification: Not applicable.
S A M P L E S
Log Sample: It's a few seconds of complete and total panic. She feels the liquid surrounding her and flinches, trying to scream, waiting for the shock. But it doesn't come. The liquid is drained, and the young woman is left on the floor with blue stuff all over her. Johanna stands up and stumbles a bit, unsteady on her feet after that incident and due to her emaciation. But she's already looking at her surroundings, trying to figure out where she is. They came for her. Was this the rebellion's hideout? Why would they have put her in a weird tube?
She hurries to find a towel and starts wiping herself down with her shaky hands. There was no way she was going to shower, no matter how gross she felt. That's when she notices the tattoo and panics. Is it like the tracker? Did the Capitol do this? Or the rebels? She's spitting mad about it. She claws at her arm, but it's stuck there. With a resigned (for the meantime) sigh, she takes in the other people around her. They're half-naked as well. Johanna doesn't mind it, but she puts on the ship's uniform. Next mission: To get some answers. She grabs the device and walks over to someone, putting on her sweetest face.
